Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G-SDI (No Optical Module Included)

Blackmagic Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G converts SDI to optical fiber and optical fiber to SDI in both directions at the same time, you can even have different video standards going in each direction! The 12G-SDI connections are multi rate, which makes it compatible with all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats and equipment up to 2160p60, including Level A and B devices. You can install any standard 3G, 6G or 12G-SDI SFP optical fiber module so you can send SDI using the same low cost optical fiber cables that are commonly used for computer networks.

Features

  • Bidirectional, multi-rate SDI to optical fiber conversion
  • Supports video signals up to DCI 4K25 and UHD 4K60
  • Automatic signal detection
  • Supports up to 16-channel embedded audio
  • Change settings with function switches or the macOS/Windows-compatible software
  • Universal power supply with locking connector
  • Rugged, compact metal housing
  • One SMPTE optical fiber SFP socket (requires separate module)
  • 12G/6G/3G-SDI input and output

Frequently Asked Questions

Why send SDI over optical fibre instead of coax?

Distance and interference. Coax SDI runs are limited to tens of metres at 12G, whereas optical fibre carries the same signal far further with no electrical noise pickup and no earth-loop problems between buildings. For a stadium, a large auditorium or a camera position across a car park, fibre is usually the only practical option.

What does "no optical module included" mean?

The SFP optical transceiver that the fibre actually plugs into is bought separately. The converter accepts any standard 3G, 6G or 12G-SDI SFP optical module, so you choose the one that matches your fibre type and distance, and you can use the same low-cost fibre cabling common in computer networks. Ask us if you want the module supplied with it.

Does it convert in both directions at once?

Yes. It converts SDI to optical fibre and fibre back to SDI simultaneously, and the two directions can even carry different video standards. The 12G-SDI connections are multi-rate, so SD, HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60 are all supported, including Level A and B devices, with automatic signal detection and up to 16 channels of embedded audio.
