Wireless Microphone Buying Guide (2026): AIR-B2 vs AIR-B4 — the Modern Replacement for the Phenyx PTU Series

Choosing a UHF wireless microphone system for your church, school, conference room or events business comes down to two questions: how many microphones do you need at once, and how reliable is the system in the real world?

If you've been looking at the older Phenyx PTU-71, PTU-52, PTU-7000 or PTU-5200, here's the situation: MSM AV is no longer a Phenyx Pro dealer, so we can't supply, warranty or service those systems in Australia any more. What we stock in their place is the TrueWave Pro AIR series — newer, rechargeable, and backed locally. This guide shows you exactly which one to buy.

The quick answer

  • Need up to 2 microphones?TrueWave Pro AIR-B2 — 2-channel, two rechargeable handhelds. $247.99
  • Need up to 4 microphones?TrueWave Pro AIR-B4 — 4-channel, four rechargeable handhelds, 1U rackmount. $495.99

Both are true-diversity UHF systems with rechargeable lithium microphones, dual/quad balanced XLR outputs, auto-scan and IR sync — and both are stocked in Australia with fast, free shipping.

Which Phenyx model does each AIR system replace?

If you were buying… Channels Our replacement
Phenyx PTU-71 (dual UHF) 2 mics AIR-B2
Phenyx PTU-52 (dual, frequency hopping) 2 mics AIR-B2
Phenyx PTU-7000 (quad UHF) 4 mics AIR-B4
Phenyx PTU-5200 (quad, frequency hopping) 4 mics AIR-B4

The rule of thumb is simple: two-channel Phenyx systems → AIR-B2; four-channel Phenyx systems → AIR-B4.

Why we recommend the AIR series

The AIR-B2 and AIR-B4 aren't just "in stock" alternatives — on the points below they measurably improve on the older PTU systems:

  • Rechargeable microphones, no more disposable batteries. Each handheld uses a removable 18650 rechargeable lithium cell (about 10 hours per charge) with magnetic charging cables in the box. The PTU-71 and PTU-52 handhelds run on disposable AA batteries — the AIR series pays that cost back over time.
  • True Diversity reception. Two antennas per channel constantly pick the stronger signal, which means fewer dropouts on stage and across a room.
  • Fast, foolproof setup. Auto Scan finds a clean frequency and IR sync pairs each mic to the receiver in seconds — no fiddly manual channel matching.
  • Clean, flexible outputs. Balanced XLR out for every channel (2 on the AIR-B2, 4 on the AIR-B4) plus a 6.35 mm mixed output to feed a single input.
  • Modern power. The AIR-B2 receiver runs on convenient USB-C; the AIR-B4 is a 1U rackmount on 12 V for permanent installs.
  • Stocked, warranted and supported in Australia. Both ship fast and free AU-wide from MSM AV, with local warranty and local returns — not a grey import you have to send overseas if something goes wrong.

How to choose the right one

  • Counting your microphones is the main decision. If you'll never need more than two live mics at once (a presenter + a Q&A mic, a vocalist + a guest), the AIR-B2 is all you need. If you run panels, worship teams or multi-speaker events, step up to the AIR-B4 so you have four independent channels.
  • Think about growth. If you're close to needing three mics, the AIR-B4 gives you headroom without buying a second system later.
  • Consider the install. Fixed rack? The AIR-B4's 1U rackmount receiver drops straight in. Portable or desktop setup? The AIR-B2's compact USB-C receiver is easy to move and power from a laptop brick or power bank.
  • Handhelds vs lapel/headset. Both ship with handheld mics; if you need lapel or headset mics, ask us about bodypack options to pair with your system.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Phenyx PTU-71, PTU-52, PTU-7000 and PTU-5200 discontinued? Not by Phenyx — they are still listed by the manufacturer overseas. What has changed is that MSM AV is no longer a Phenyx Pro dealer, so we can't supply them, and we can't warranty or service them here. A unit bought from an overseas seller comes with no Australian warranty and no local support, and a fault means shipping it back overseas at your cost. Our replacement is the AIR series, stocked and supported in Australia.

Will these work in Australia? Yes — both are UHF systems stocked and sold in Australia by MSM AV, and ship free AU-wide.

Do I still need batteries? No disposables. Each microphone uses a removable rechargeable lithium cell and comes with magnetic charging cables. Keep a spare cell charged for back-to-back events.

How many systems can I run in the same room? Each system gives you multiple selectable channels (2 × 100 on the AIR-B2, 4 × 100 on the AIR-B4), and Auto Scan helps them find clear, non-clashing frequencies. For very large multi-system setups, get in touch and we'll help you plan channels.

What do I plug them into? Any mixer, powered speaker or interface with XLR or 6.35 mm (1/4") inputs. Use the individual XLR outputs for full control, or the single mixed output to feed one channel.

Can I get lapel or headset mics? The kits include handheld mics. Talk to us about adding bodypack transmitters with lapel or headset mics for presenters and worship use.
